Alignment to Common Core State Standards

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which have been adopted by 45 states, are intended to provide a clear and consistent framework and benchmarks for the skills and knowledge that students need to succeed in college and in the workforce. The Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS) offers a rigorous and engaging curriculum that supports efforts to meet these new standards.

The CCSS in English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects differ from prior standards in that they explicitly encourage developing and using literacy skills across disciplines. They also highlight the importance of the application of knowledge through essential higher-order skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication. Another key feature of the CCSS is that media and research skills are embedded into the standards. These areas of emphasis parallel the design of the Ford PAS curriculum, which takes an interdisciplinary approach, develops foundational skills through different content areas and in meaningful contexts, and integrates media, technology, and research skills.

The CCSS in Mathematics are organized into six content strands but also highlight eight Standards for Mathematical Practice that run throughout all the strands. These standards focus on processes that students use to deepen and demonstrate their conceptual understanding, such as problem-solving, abstract reasoning, constructing arguments, modeling, and using appropriate mathematic tools strategically. Three of the Ford PAS modules strongly promote the use of the mathematical practices. In these three modules, students strategize how to use math—in particular, algebra and data analysis—to make sense of and persevere in solving complex problems in personal and business contexts and to justify their choice of the tools and math concepts they use.
