“It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.” Alan Cohen
Movement — consider for a moment what a thought-provoking word it is. For me, it conjures up beautiful images of trees swaying in the wind, birds soaring with grace, sailboats effortlessly navigating the seas, and dancers expressing themselves amidst the surroundings of music. Yet, movement extends beyond the physical realm. It can also describe the synergy created when individuals come together, united by a shared vision and motivated by a common purpose.
In that context, the Ford NGL Network emerges as a transformative force — a coalition of courageous communities leading the charge in redefining the landscape of education — a true movement. With a belief in the potential of a dramatically better and sustainable educational model, Ford NGL communities stand as beacons of innovation and inspiration. As suggested in the opening quote by author and musician Alan Cohen, we are choosing to move away from the secure to a more adventurous road where thoughtful and constructive change becomes a source of power.
As we reflect on the progress of the past months, the momentum of our movement is strong. Designating Ft. Wayne Community Schools and Whitley County Consolidated Schools into the Ford NGL family, alongside Akron Public Schools as our inaugural Ford NGL PreK-12 Demonstration Site, marks significant milestones in our journey. These are surely causes for celebration, affirmation, and a renewed sense of determination.
In March, Akron-in-Action, a Ford Next Generation Learning Community Experience showcased the Akron Public Schools College and Career Academies. At the event, over 250 individuals from across the nation along with students in classrooms and community organizations, witnessed firsthand the transformative power of the Ford NGL approach to education. Similarly, the Academies of Nashville opened their doors to nearly 300 visitors from across the country, all eager to gain insights from our collective experience.
Conversations with respected organizations like the Carnegie and Hewlett Foundations further amplify our impact, as we share our innovative practices and Akron’s Essential Experiences Framework with other districts who are interested in this movement. The ripple effect of this work is remarkable, as more communities express their desire to understand and join our movement.
As we envision the future, the possibilities are exciting. In the near and long term, we stand poised to transform the educational landscape, fundamentally altering for the better how teachers teach and students learn. Rooted in authenticity and community-connected learning, our movement embodies the promise of a brighter, purposeful, and joyful future for both our students and our communities.
It does indeed take courage to release the familiar and embrace the new. To all who contribute fearlessly and tirelessly to propel this movement forward, your dedication is nothing short of inspiring. Together, we are architects of change, shaping a future where education is not just a journey but a transformative experience. Thank you for your commitment and resolve. Your contributions are the foundation upon which our movement thrives, and together, we will continue to champion the cause of educational excellence.
