We have all heard the phrase and maybe even have said it, “Change is hard.” But despite that sentiment, we are part of a network because we share a common belief that there is a need for such change and have made a commitment to transformational change for the benefit of entire communities. Not just change, but transformational change – a type of change that disrupts and reimagines an entire system. But still, we press forward.
As a former district leader, I understand both the weight and opportunity this journey brings. May is an especially full month as you are both wrapping up one school year with many events and celebrations, and at the same time, making decisions and plans for the following. Even with your busy spring schedule, I encourage you to set aside some time for quiet recentering around your focus. System-level change requires elements such as reflection and vulnerability, shared ownership, innovation, strategic thinking, and high expectations. Remind yourself of why this work is important to you, consider your current reality and how you might move forward, and remember that you are not alone in this important, transformational work.
Considerations for System Level Transformation
Reflection and Vulnerability
- What is/are the ultimate goal(s) of the transformation?
- Is the goal truly transformational and at a systemic level?
- Are my words, actions and decisions aligned to the goal(s)?
- How do I model vulnerability in my role as a leader to promote trust and continual growth?
Shared Ownership
- Am I leading the team to integrate and/or re-align individual responsibilities to the shared goals?
- Do all central office departments use the transformation as a new lens to filter their work through?
- Can all stakeholders clearly communicate the high-level goals of the transformation and how their role is connected to and supporting the efforts?
- How does collective reflection strengthen the impact of transformational change?
Innovation and Strategic Thinking
- What strategies might I use to encourage open dialogue and collective problem-solving?
- Are you using both a telescope to keep your eye on the vision and possibilities, while also using a microscope to examine the details needed to get you there?
High Expectations
- How can my team and I foster a culture where high expectations are embraced rather than feared?
- Do I hold myself and others accountable for having a “how might we” mindset?
- How do high expectations drive innovation and continuous improvement?
- What indicators will show that meaningful change is taking place?
“There’s little growth and progression without learning and reflection.”
